Updating Your Beneficiaries

Whether you had a lot of change in 2025 or no change at all, updating your beneficiaries and their contact information regularly is an important part of ensuring your PERA account will be passed on according to your wishes.

A beneficiary is a person or organization you designate to receive your retirement benefits if you pass before reaching retirement. You can select more than one beneficiary for your PERA benefit.

To check who is currently listed as your beneficiary, log into your secure member account, then select the “View/edit beneficiaries” button at the top of the home page. From here you can edit beneficiary contact information, remove beneficiaries, and add new beneficiaries.

As time passes and circumstances change, your beneficiary may also change. By checking your beneficiary information regularly, you ensure your benefit goes where you want it to.

Choosing a Beneficiary

One of the most important things to do as a PERA member is to designate a beneficiary and keep that information up to date. When choosing a beneficiary, you might consider a family member, children, spouse, friend, or organization. Learn more about choosing a beneficiary on the “How to Choose a Beneficiary” webpage.
