Updates on the Social Security Fairness Act

In February, the Social Security Administration (SSA) began to pay retroactive benefits and increase monthly benefit payments to those who were affected by the now-repealed Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO).

The repeal of WEP and GPO allows PERA retirees to receive their full Social Security benefits along with their full PERA benefits. The passage of the Social Security Fairness Act and collecting your full Social Security benefit will not affect your PERA benefit; the changes only apply to Social Security benefits. Any questions about Social Security benefits should be directed to SSA.
