Beginning October 15, 2026, Colorado PERA will send employers an automated email when a member has requested a refund of contributions, but PERA has not yet received termination information from the employer. Affected employers will receive the notifications on the 15th of each month hereafter.
When a PERA member leaves PERA-covered employment, they may choose to request a refund of their contributions, do a rollover of their contributions to a qualified account, or leave their contributions with PERA. Before PERA can process a refund or rollover request, we must receive verification that the member has terminated employment with all PERA-covered employers.
To help prevent delays in processing these requests, employers should submit termination information through the STARS employer portal when an employee separates from PERA-covered employment.
What should you do if you receive this email?
Review the individual(s) listed in the notification and determine whether each person has terminated employment with your agency.
If the individual has terminated employment
Please report the employee’s termination to PERA by either:
- Including the individual on your next termination file submitted to PERA and ensuring the appropriate final contribution amounts are reported; or
- Completing a Termination Certification through the STARS employer portal.
If the individual has not terminated employment
Notify your PERA Employer Representative so the member’s refund request can be canceled.
Why are these notifications being sent?
These monthly notifications help employers identify missing termination information and report it promptly to PERA. Timely and accurate reporting allows us to process members’ refund and rollover requests efficiently and minimize delays.
If you have questions about an individual listed in a notification or need assistance with the appropriate reporting process, please contact your PERA Employer Representative.
